ABOUT US

Please let me introduce myself. My name is Barry Baertlein, your Oregon Chrysanthemums and Hostas Grower and provider of rooted cuttings.

I have been a Horticultural Professional since I attained my B.S. in Horticulture at Oregon State University more than 30 years ago.

I have also studied and practiced bonsai for more than 30 years.

Now for the first time in 2023 I will start providing plants for the people who want to show or sell their cut flowers and bonsai. I am very excited that from my collection of over 200 varieties of Chrysanthemums, that I will be able to offer more than 80 to you this first year. I am offering over 25 varieties of small hostas. Other accent and companion plants will olso be offered.

Chrysanthemums (or mums) were first cultivated in China (15th century B.C.) and later in Japan (around 8th century A.D.). Chrysanthemums were introduced to the west until the 17th century.

“Kiku” and “Giboshi” are the two Japanese words used in the name of my business.

“Kiku” means Chrysanthemum. “Kiku Ningyō” is the term used for the large Chrysanthemums that you would see in a flower show where there are single disbudded blooms that look like dolls. Ningyō is the Japanese word for doll.

Some Chrysanthemums can also be grown into bonsai and artists can create a work of art in less than one year called Kiku Bonsai. This dwarf group of Chrysanthemums is also known as gnomes.

Though you may not want to accent Kiku Bonsai with a “Giboshi”, which means Hosta, you should consider having a complete display for your suitable bonsai and add an accent plant such as a Hosta or other perennials offered here.
